PROBAN® workwear delivers premium protection from thermal risks of electric arc, arc-flash, flash fire, molten metal splash, welding splatter, heat and flame for the lifetime of the garment*.
The PROBAN® polymer is created by an in-situ polymerization within the cotton fibers to form a cotton-PROBAN® composite material at the fabric stage that is permanently bound to the core of the fabric without modifying the cotton structure. PROBAN® is a molecularly designed composite material consisting of a natural fiber, cotton, which is intimately integrated with a manufactured polymer, PROBAN®; this PROBAN® polymer contains phosphorus, a well-known FR.
Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) was used to investigate the cross sectional structure of a PROBAN® cotton fiber. With consideration that the PROBAN® polymer contains phosphorus, a technique referred to as elemental dot mapping was used to show the distribution of phosphorus throughout the cotton fiber. In these tests the positive presence of phosphorus is depicted by the white dots.
Figures 1(a) and 1(b) demonstrate the complete distribution of phosphorus and clearly indicate that the PROBAN® polymer is present throughout the composite material.
What is vital is that the composite material is tough enough to stand up to everyday wear and be unaffected by multiple washes throughout the lifetime of the garment. Image 1(b) shows that even after 100 washes in an industrial wash-dry cycle according to ISO 15797, the structure of the composite material is stable and unaffected.
The cotton fibers are not treated with the PROBAN® polymer; rather, the PROBAN® polymer is created by an in-situ polymerization within the cotton fibers to form a cotton-PROBAN® composite material at the fabric stage that is permanently bound to the core of the fabric.
This work provides clear evidence that PROBAN® technology delivers FR protection for the lifetime of the garment.
